Story
The remarkable story of Irena Gut told from the point of view of a strong-willed woman and of the triumph of the human spirit over devastating tragedy as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the atrocities of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film was shown in many more Canadian theaters than the typical Canadian film, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to allocate a substantial marketing budget to the film. As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters at the end of its third week of release. This region of Poland was invaded by the Soviet Union and yet it is occupied by German forces.

Irena’s Oath is about Irena Gut, a Polish woman who is forced into service by the German occupiers in the town of Tarnopol (now Ternopol in Ukraine).
If this wasn’t a true story, I wouldn’t have believed a word of it
While working for Major Rügemer, she is assigned to supervise the laundry and then as housekeeper in his villa, which has been seized from a Polish family. When she sees that all the people in the laundry are to be executed as part of Hitler’s plan, she hatches a plan to hide them in the very house where the major now lives. The acting was so bad that I felt like I was watching a modern costume drama rather than a film that takes us back to the crazy era of Nazi madness. It becomes pretty clear early on that Rügemer has his eye on Irena, but things spiral even further when he discovers Jews hiding in his house.
I wanted to love the film for the courage in deep desperation, but it wasn’t entirely well done
The speed and transformation from superior to inferior to Polish lover happened so quickly that it just didn’t make sense in the narrative. Sophie Nélisse did a great job as Irena of conveying the compassion, panic, fear, horror and courage needed to survive. After witnessing a child murdered on the street by yet another nefarious «German,» she really threw herself into her risky plan to save as many Jews as she could. I don’t know and I can’t say for sure, but I felt like it could have been done better.
The credits were really sweet
I’m just glad it really happened and the people got to live full lives.
