David Cage is sure that the industry in stagnation. That children and youth play video games, and the audience does not expand. He is worried that you can talk with adults about a movie or a good book, but about video games – not. We understand him. Nobody likes it when you are not taken seriously.
Who is David Cage? In short – one of the main people of the industry today.
Who are we not to reckon with David Cage's opinion?
Meet Beyond: Two Souls – entertainment for absolutely all. With the exception of those, of course, who do not have PlayStation 3.

Digital entertainment
New work Quantic Dream even more moved away from the fact that we are used to calling video games. No one will punish you for mistakes-any of the options for the development of events to something will lead. It will almost not have QTE in it – even one who never held a joystick can play in his hands. The Gamescom-2013 reported that a regular smartphone can be used as a controller, much more familiar to many people than DualShock 3.
In exchange for all this, David Cage relies on a global, acute dramatic plot, emotional experiences and nonlinearity. In other words, of all video game finds, he takes into his work only interactivity and freedom of choice. Everything else is from the more familiar to the adults of cultural spheres – from cinema and literature. Methods of building a plot, playing actors, the depth of the narrative, an unusual torn composition – completely not typical things for video games promise to break into our industry and break all the templates.
► Persons depth are really amazing. Judging by the rollers and diaries of developers, the animation of movements is also on top. And all this – for hopelessly old ps3.
This is important: To make the game available to everyone, Quantic Dream almost completely abandoned the multi -stage QTE. If in Heavy Rain your mother, sister or girlfriend could not cope with management and poor Madisson Page received a drill in the stomach in the house of the maniac Clofelinchik, after which he had to be replayed, then everything will probably be fine. Now everything is tied to the stick that needs to https://sister-site.org/jackpot-village/ be performed correctly at the right time. How? No one will tell, but promise that management will be the most intuitive in the world.
► who this man does not know for sure, but his eyes are damn good. It seems that for the first time in video games by eyes you can judge a person.
Beyond plans to balance on the verge. But can I resist? Or maybe we should reconsider our views on video games? We will find out very soon.
David Cage thinks about the future of the industry and does not see the usual video games in it. He sees digital entertainment for all generations at once, and not just for young people. He sees video games in essence, but related works of art in content. And if Beond is really interesting to absolutely everyone, then all the disputes around the game will stall by themselves.
Not a story, but a novel
If the previous product Quantic Dream – Heavy Rain – It was a fairly chamber detective, then in Beyond: Two Souls everything is much larger. Firstly, this is not a story, but a novel: the game covers fifteen years of the girl’s life Jodie Holmes (and the adventure will last, by the way, about ten hours). Secondly, the story does not rotate around one specific event-the children were not abducted, no one killed anyone in the toilets. In exchange for this – the story of Jody’s life, which was not lucky enough to be inextricably linked with the ghost Aiden, who eliminates all her problems and constantly saves from death, and the Old Testament secret of death, exciting minds since the appearance of a reasonable man.
► I wonder if you jump from the bridge – what will happen? In the case of Jody Holmes, probably nothing. Ghost isine whether he wants it or not, will save her. As always.
Jody’s story will be served in pieces: maybe in the recent “cloud atlas” Vachovski , But with the adjustment of only two heroes, and maybe in the "memeno" Christopher Nolan – Details of the plot, of course, are kept secret. But it is already clear that the time intervals in episodes will be different, interspersed.
There will be episodes from childhood- those times when Jody first showed their paranormal abilities and parents abandoned it (and she, of course, became a laboratory mouse), gloomy puberty with all its maximalism, work on the CIA (and how else, with such- then with opportunities!), hermit and, apparently, quite Keruakian Batnikism. This is only what we personally noticed in trailers.
At all these stages, the ghost will be with Jody, and on the tail – people who are afraid of them. The eternal flight from those who do not understand you, and the flight from themselves is the old idea that will never cease to be relevant.

Interweaving of souls
Isine, like any normal spirit, knows how to pass through the walls, arrange local paranormal phenomena and instill in people, bringing them, say, to the suicide. But Jody herself is able to stand up for herself – thanks to combat training no worse than Jordan O’Neill from "Soldier Jane".
In the first demo showed, the girl took special forces into ticks, but the ghost dealt with him in two accounts. He made the sniper shoot his own, and then rush off the roof and finally blew up the car standing next to the gas station. In other words, the ghumple for the ghost (we can switch to it with one button) will be a sort of puzzle: we fly around Jody and think how best to help her – everything around is to blow up or act more cunning?
► Who are they, these special forces, against one fragile girl who guards the ghost?
As it became known on Gamescom-2013, in Beyond: Two Souls there will be a local cooperative for two people-one will control the ghost, the second-Jody. But in turn.
At the presentation for journalists, David Cage gave it like almost a revolution of the game on one couch; However, we did not notice any revolution. In Heavy Rain, it was possible to play quite comfortably in the company of four people, passing each other a joystick – each by the hero. But in Beyond: Two Souls there are only two heroes, and one even before a heap and a ghost. What will come of this, so far it is not entirely clear.
THIS IS INTERESTING: The developers say that 174 days were spent on the capture of the heroes movements. If you find it difficult to evaluate this fact, I will tell you – this is a lot.

The flour of creativity
Plots Heavy Rain and even more so Fahrenheit It is not called brilliant – in terms of psychologism of the provisions, they are seriously inferior not only by the best thrillers like "silence of the lamb" or "seven", but even to films of the easiest gathering. However, until then, this was not in sight in video games. But if Heavy Rain was played in cinemas, he would not have received high assessments of critics.
However, now we know one game that works with the plot much better. Speech, of course, about The Last of Us, in which the developers managed not only to tell a very adult and touching story, but also in some incomprehensible way to force her to work in unison with the traditional shootings and other combat scenes for the genre. And if there is no doubt in the technological side of the game (brilliant animators and artists work without jokes in Quantic Dream), then with the plot it is more and more complicated.
► Somali scenes do not seem dramatic and serious at all – on the contrary, they are naive and even funny. Will the game be in this situation an adult enough to satisfy the ambitions of its main ideologist?
This is important: The soundtrack writes to the game Hans Zimmer, Which you probably know, for example, by working on a “thin red line”, “king-liva”, “Pirates of the Caribbean” and a recent “man of steel”. So you can not worry for musical accompaniment.
And here the most important and, in fact, the only risk factor is pop-up-the non-linearity that David Cage discussed so much on Gamescom-2013.
Whoever says, but non -linearity leaves a negative imprint on the work of any, even the most skilled screenwriter. The ending of “one of us” would not be so deep if the Naughty Dog was allowed to choose. The whole game led us to only one, correct, perfectly integral finale.
► This is the script for Beyond: Two Souls. I wonder how all this promised nonlinearity is formed there? As in the "game of classics" Cortasara?
In contrast to this, at Heavy Rain, the ending consisted of some slurred shreds: this character got up, this one went crazy, but here you have the grave of the third character-he died. We learned what happened to everyone, but did everyone understand how it all ended entirely?
► It is difficult to list all the problems that Beyond: Two Souls is going to raise. However, the fact that the emotions of us will pour over the edge, there is no doubt.
And if David Cage manages to create a solid and impressive plot, as in The Last of US (or Better), which will not break into pieces, then beond: Two Souls will become a revolution. If not … Well, then, this whole tricky non-linearity is just an expensive wrapper that distracts attention from the usual block diagram, which is hidden inside.
For a work that offers to play not in the game, but in life, as his author expressed once, it may turn out to be a fatal.
Success factors
Risk factors
- extensive experience and bold ambitions of developers;
- huge script, excellent actors, big money;
- focus on all ages at once;
- innovation.
- The quality bar is lifted to heaven;
- Predictable difficulties with the integrity of the plot.
Stage of development
The game comes out already in October, which means that work on it is either over or came to the end.
We will wait?
Apparently, only two options are possible. Either a brilliant masterpiece, or – a very expensive failure. There is no other. They are waiting for the game too much, it is too ambitious, the price of an error is too high.
