No excuses needed
It is what it is. His characters are always grounded, and he is extremely skilled at casting. But to be great, you have to write good parts for women. The writing should be as good, if not better, than for men. Guys are simple.
Women are smarter, more complex
Beth on Yellowstone (great character and performance), the barrel racers, the lone ranch woman (played by the fantastic Jen Landon Teeter), are all great female characters who fit into the world of the story in a natural, relaxed way. They are strong and assertive. Not just a ‘partner…’ or a T&A. He stepped up his game with a great Faith Hill character who was forced into "1883" followed by Dame Mirren in the ignition that was "1923". Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best work of her career.
What a face!
I definitely buy him as the CIA chief in an open marriage (nice touch). I buy De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning rage that won’t let go and thank you, thank you, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT LETTING her get the best of a male soldier with an extra…hundred pounds of muscle. Truth first! I think her character is much more interesting if she’s someone who needs to be knocked out cold or just knocked to the ground before she leaves. Now let’s talk about Jill Wagner, should I say her hair?

From dirty Hallmark to super-badass special forces? Special mention: Mrs. Lanier as the annoying teenage daughter. I’m looking forward to this loose arc as long as they continue to avoid the clichés of teenage angst. Good actor, could be interesting…
